Rolls-Royce`s preliminary results for 1998 have shown record profits following the sale of its transmission and distribution business last year to VA Tech Elin and the associated focus on its core businesses. Profit before tax was up 18 per cent at £325m ($527m) on sales of core products of £4326m, up ten per cent from 1997. It said electricity deregulation has stimulated demand for its gas turbines.

One of the largest bushings in the world has been delivered to Shenyang Transformers by Rolls-Royce, UK. The 1,100-kV bushing will be used in a single-phase test transformer for ultra-high voltage transmission research. The bushing, 7.3 meters tall, entered service in March. It is used to carry high-voltage conductors through an earthen barrier, such as a wall or metal tank.
