A subsidiary of Iberdrola, ScottishPower, and its partners are planning to deliver what they claim will be the largest electrolyser project in the UK.
The Green Hydrogen for Scotland, a partnership between ScottishPower, BOC and ITM Power has submitted a proposal to develop a 20MW electrolyser in Glasgow, Scotland.
The electrolyser will be located close to ScottishPower’s 539 MW Whitelee wind farm and will be paired with 50MW of an energy storage battery system.
BOC will provide the engineering and operation services for the project, SottishPower its renewable energy whilst ITM Power will deliver the 20MW electrolyser.

The three companies are expecting their proposal to be approved by the end of autumn 2021 for the project to start supplying hydrogen to the commercial market before 2023.
Once complete, the project will produce up to 8 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, roughly equivalent to fuelling over 550 buses to travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back again each day.
The 20MW electrolyser is Green Hydrogen for Scotland’s first initiative under efforts to create green hydrogen production facilities with clusters of refuelling stations across Scotland.
Glasgow, which is set to host the United Nations 26th Climate Change Conference, COP26, later this year, aims to become the first net-zero city in the UK by 2030 by creating, among other initiatives, a zero-emission vehicle fleet, using only electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

ScottishPower’s application to develop the 20MW electrolyser follows parent company Iberdrola seeking an approval from the Next Generation EU programme to deploy 53 projects, which would activate investments of €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion) to achieve an annual production of 60,000 tn/year.
