District heating company Kuhmon Lämpö Oy and Finnish renewable energy firm KPA Unicon have signed a contract to deliver a bio boiler plant to Kuhmo, Finland.
The Unicon Renefluid (15MW) bio plant will use bark, sawdust, and wood chips as fuel to produce heat for the residents of the city of Kuhmo as well as Kuhmo Oy’s sawmill.
The bio boiler plant, due to be commissioned in 2023, will include the fluidised bed boiler, electrical and automation systems, a modular boiler building and fuel handling.

“The boiler investment will enable an increase in the production capacity of Kuhmo Oy’s sawmill and the expansion of the district heating network in the city of Kuhmo.
“The increase in heat production is both technically and logistically environmentally friendly and energy efficient, as the biomass used in the plant comes from a sawmill on the same site.
“The boiler investment will also improve the security of district heating supply and maintenance planning in the future”, stated Janne Heikkinen, managing director, Kuhmon Lämpö Oy.
The bio boiler plant will include KPA Unicon’s bag filter to minimise emissions in the surrounding atmosphere.
The plant will also be equipped with KPA Unicon’s PlantSys digital service platform, a remote control room system (PlantSys Operation) as well as a digital operating log (PlantSys Diary) and reporting system (PlantSys Reporting).
Operations will be monitored with artificial intelligence to ensure faults are detected and solved quickly.
“Together with Kuhmon Lämpö Oy, we get a well-designed entity that will complement Kuhmon Lämpö Oy’s district heating and sawmill’s heat production by utilising the sawmill’s by-products as biomass. Bag filter, on the other hand, ensures a cleaner environment and better air quality”, says Jukka-Pekka Kovanen, managing director, KPA Unicon.
